Emerson Street Food Waste Collection

Ashley Barnes was an intern working for the Chesapeake Conservation Corps (CCC) Program hosted by the Chesapeake Bay Trust for the 2022-2023 year. Chesapeake Conservation Corps Program is a fellowship where young individuals can gain leadership experience, training, and network support for those who want to work in the environmental field. Ashley served her Corps program year with ECO City Farms to learn the agricultural trade. 

The CCC program requires members to complete a Capstone Project in order to graduate from the program. For Ashley’s project, The Emerson Street Food Waste Collection Program, she aims to educate and encourage residents of Emerson Street and the Parkway Condos to dispose of their food waste in a sustainable manner by having it composted at ECO City Farms. 

The Emerson Street Food Waste Collection Program is a community outreach and education program to encourage residents of Emerson Street in Bladensburg, MD to dispose of their food waste is sustainable manner by having it composted at ECO. One of the main goals for the program is the increase the accessibility for the residents of the Parkway Condominium at Emerson Street to dispose of their food waste to be composted on-farm. Another goal is to inform the residents about why food waste is an environmental hazard and how to properly dispose of the food.
