Autumn Woods Farm Update March 2014
ECO City Farms hosted a successful public meeting at the Emerson House in early February, we presented our plans for the Bladensburg Farm and had an open dialogue with members of the public, as well as, town administrators.
Our after school program with the Magic Johnson Center has continued through the winter, members of our staff have prepared different lessons teaching the kids about different aspects of farming and healthy living, including plant growth, weather, & healthy foods. Our other after school program with Elizabeth Seaton HS will be starting soon, once the weather gets better.
Want to get your hands dirty and learn about the food you eat? Join us Saturday April 12 & 26, 2014 9am – 12pm. They will be the first of our 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month volunteer hours.
With the long, cold, and wet winter, growing food at Autumn Woods without established hoophouses has not been easy, but in the low tunnels we have been able to keep a cadre of kale, mustard greens, spinach, scallions, and collards growing all season. Soon we will be preparing the soil for spring and planting far many more crops, like lettuce, bok choy, and eventually tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and beans.
The spring (if it ever comes!) will be a very busy time at ECO Bladensburg. Not only will we be growing more food, for both our Farm Share program and to sell at our Autumn Woods Farm Stand, which will be held every Saturday 10 am- 12 pm starting June 7, but we will be having several construction projects. We will be erecting a hoophouse that will be the future home of our hard working worms, which we will be moving from our Edmonston farm to Bladensburg. Also a processing kitchen and a farm stand will be going up this spring to, to make sure the freshest vegetables are available to the community!
On Saturday March 29 there will be a tour of our Edmonston Farm. Transportation will be provided from the Bladensburg Farm at Autumn Woods. The bus will leave at 10 am and return no later than 12 pm.
Interested in taking a bigger role in our farm or want to learn more about opportunities? Come to our Tuesday April 8, 2014 10 am- 12pm Autumn Woods Community Action team meeting. Join us in the Autumn Woods Apartment Rental Lobby.
