A field trip to Lynchburg Grows

ECO City Farms Staff and New and Immigrant Farmer Trainees took a field trip this past weekend to Lynchburg Grows, an Urban Farm in Lynchburg Virginia.  Lynchburg Grows operates an incredible farm on a 6.5 acre former rose growing operation and greenhouse complex in the thriving little post-industrial city of Lynchburg in southern Virginia.  The farm features 8 greenhouses, specializing in mixed vegetables, roses, aquaponics, and includes an impressive composting operation and animal husbandry program including chickens, bees and a goat.

It was really great to see their operation, learn about their success and talk with the folks at Lynchburg Grows who share so many of the same challenges for urban agriculture and spreading healthy local food and share the same vision for our future as we do.  Winter is an especially good time to spend sharing knowledge with other farmers and gain new insights as we prepare our spring plans.  A special thanks goes out to Dereck and the Lynchburg Grows staff for their contagious enthusiasm for urban agriculture and a great tour!
